High-Speed Magnetic Surveying for Unexploded Ordnance Using UAV Systems

چکیده

Using Uncrewed Aerial vehicles (UAVs) to rapidly scan areas for potential unexploded ordnance (UXO) can provide an efficiency increase while minimizing detonation risks. We present a complete overview of how such mappings be performed using scalar magnetometers, including initial sensor testing, time stamping validation, data positioning, noise removal, and source model inversion. A test survey was across disarmed UXO targets, during which three magnetometers were towed in airframe (“bird”) 10 m below small (<25 kg) high speed (∼10 m/s) UAV avoid magnetic disturbances from the itself. Data collected ∼58 min flight, with each traversing ∼31.7 km acquire dense coverage 600 × 100 area. By individual bird, detection results single-sensor several different multi-sensor configurations compared. The obtained exhibited low apparent floors (on order tens picoTesla) retained precision that enabled targeted modelling removal high-frequency amplitudes ±5 picoTesla. All gradiometer tested recovery most targets (including all major targets), although horizontal configuration significantly worse comparison.

Characterization and quantification of magnetic remanence in unexploded ordnance

Under the Range Rule (1997), the Department of Defense defines unexploded ordnance (UXO) as a piece of ordnance that has been deployed, but has not exploded. This study investigated a subset of UXO including artillery shells and mortars (projectiles), but excluding landmines. UXO contaminates approximately 15 million acres of land in the United States alone. The geophysical tools most frequentl...

Statistical Methods for Unexploded Ordnance Discrimination

We propose statistical processing methods and performance analysis techniques for discrimination and localization of Unexploded Ordnance (UXOs) using EMI sensors based on nonparametrically defined prior probability density functions for target-relevant features. In the first part of this thesis, new sets of UXO discrimination methods using these nonparametric prior models are introduced where w...

A High-Performance Portable Transient Electro-Magnetic Sensor for Unexploded Ordnance Detection

Portable transient electromagnetic (TEM) systems can be well adapted to various terrains, including mountainous, woodland, and other complex terrains. They are widely used for the detection of unexploded ordnance (UXO). As the core component of the portable TEM system, the sensor is constructed with a transmitting coil and a receiving coil. Based on the primary field of the transmitting coil an...
